Pakistan to Launch National Fisheries Policy to Boost Exports and Investment

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is set to introduce its first-ever National Fisheries Policy, aiming to enhance seafood exports and attract foreign investment.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has drafted the policy, which will be finalized after nationwide consultations. Stakeholder meetings are scheduled in Peshawar (May 15), Lahore (May 20), and Karachi (May 22), culminating in a national workshop in Islamabad this June.

Federal Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry emphasized the policy’s role in sustainable development, marine protection, and aquaculture expansion. A $3 million Global Environment Fund project will support marine conservation and eco-friendly fishing practices.

Pakistan has also secured a 25,000-metric-ton tuna quota from the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, strengthening its position in global seafood markets. Additionally, plans are underway to revitalize the Korangi Fisheries Harbour Authority and introduce incentive packages for fishing vessels, aquaculture equipment, and value-added seafood products.

The government aims to transform Pakistan into a competitive hub for sustainable seafood production, leveraging modern infrastructure and technology to unlock the sector’s full potential.
