ISLAMABAD – The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is set to introduce an electric tram service, marking a major step toward modern and sustainable public transport in the capital.
CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa confirmed the project after a meeting with National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) officials, stating that the initiative aligns with directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
The project will begin with a comprehensive feasibility study, focusing on Islamabad’s busiest transport corridors. Preliminary plans suggest four potential routes, including Rawat to Faisal Mosque via the Expressway and Jinnah Square to Islamabad International Airport via Srinagar Highway.
Officials revealed that a Chinese consultancy is likely to conduct the feasibility study, ensuring efficient planning and execution. The CDA is also working on expanding the existing electric feeder bus network, reinforcing its commitment to eco-friendly urban mobility.
While previous mass transit proposals, such as the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, failed to materialize, authorities emphasize that this time, the electric tram service is a priority, with determined efforts to ensure its completion.
