Islamabad to Introduce Electric Trams for Modern Public Transport

ISLAMABAD – The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is set to revolutionize Islamabad’s public transport system by introducing electric trams and feeder buses, aiming to reduce pollution and enhance urban mobility.

CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa announced that subsidies for transport services will be gradually phased out, with alternative revenue streams such as advertisements and smart ticketing systems ensuring financial sustainability.

The Soft Wheel Electric Tram project is in its feasibility stage, with authorities prioritizing high-traffic routes and passenger demand data to optimize service efficiency. The trams will feature multiple compartments to accommodate more passengers, with a focus on accessibility for women and persons with disabilities.

Randhawa emphasized that modern technology will be integrated into all bus terminals, including digital screens for real-time schedules, safety alerts, and advertisements. The initiative aligns with Islamabad’s vision of becoming a clean, efficient, and attractive capital city.
