Islamabad to Introduce Electric Tram Service for Sustainable Urban Mobility

ISLAMABAD – The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has unveiled plans to launch an electric tram service, aiming to modernize Islamabad’s transport infrastructure and reduce carbon emissions.

The initiative will complement the city’s existing eco-friendly public transport system, providing residents with a modern, reliable, and sustainable commuting option. The first phase will feature four key routes, including:

  • Rawat to Faisal Mosque via Islamabad Expressway
  • Jinnah Square to Islamabad International Airport via Srinagar Highway

CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa confirmed the development following a high-level meeting with the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC). Officials emphasized that a comprehensive feasibility study will be conducted to assess the project’s viability.

The tram service is expected to ease traffic congestion, enhance urban mobility, and support Islamabad’s green initiatives. Authorities are also exploring Soft Wheel Electric Trams and improvements to the existing electric feeder bus network.

This project marks a significant step toward sustainable urban development, reinforcing Islamabad’s commitment to modern, eco-friendly transportation solutions.
