Iraq Reopens Karachi Consulate to Boost Trade and Investment

KARACHI – The Iraqi Consulate in Karachi has reopened after 23 years, signaling a renewed commitment to strengthening economic and cultural ties between Iraq and Pakistan.

Consul General Maher Mjhid Jejan, during a meeting at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), emphasized the consulate’s role as a bridge for business communities in both countries. He assured round-the-clock support for Pakistani businesses exploring opportunities in Iraq and proposed the formation of a joint working group to identify areas for collaboration.

Jejan highlighted Iraq’s rapid development and new investment laws designed to attract foreign investors. He encouraged Pakistani entrepreneurs to visit Iraq and witness its stable environment firsthand, dismissing outdated security concerns.

The consul general also proposed establishing a sea-link between Basra and Karachi to enhance logistics and trade routes. Additionally, business attestation services have commenced at the consulate, and visa issuance operations are expected to start soon, complemented by electronic visa services for business travelers.

KCCI Senior Vice President Ziaul Arfeen welcomed the initiative, noting the untapped potential in trade between the two nations. He called for simplifying customs procedures and expanding the range of tradable goods to boost economic cooperation.

This development marks a significant step in fostering stronger trade, investment, and tourism ties between Iraq and Pakistan.
