ISLAMABAD – The British International Investment (BII) has provided a $75 million financing facility to HBL, Pakistan’s largest bank, to enhance financial access for the country’s smallholder farmers and agribusinesses. This strategic partnership aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices, increase climate resilience, and boost yields and incomes.
The agricultural sector, accounting for 25% of Pakistan’s GDP and employing over a third of its workforce, often struggles due to limited financial resources and poorly developed value chains. Half of the BII funds will be allocated specifically to smallholder farmers, who represent over 90% of Pakistan’s farming community.
HBL plans to utilize this funding to strengthen agricultural value chains, improve production logistics, and introduce solar-powered irrigation systems to support climate adaptation efforts. Maya Inayat Ismail, Chair of HBL’s Sustainability Forum, emphasized the bank’s commitment to mitigating climate risks and ensuring farmers’ financial security through innovative financing solutions.
BII has a longstanding history of investments in Pakistan, targeting key areas such as agriculture, poverty alleviation, infrastructure, and renewable energy. This latest initiative reinforces its dedication to fostering sustainable economic growth in the region.
